Jenny Marion - Understanding Autism from a Neurodiversity Framework
This 4-hour course will explore contemporary understandings of autism from a psychodynamic, developmental, and neurodiversity-affirming perspective. The focus will be on the lived experiences of autistic adults, especially those who are high-masking and/or who were not diagnosed earlier in life.
Topics covered will include:
The social model of disability and the neurodiversity framework.
The sensory and neurocognitive underpinnings of autism.
Common autistic traits and experiences.
Diverse autistic presentations and underdiagnosed groups.
The impact of masking, discrimination, and minority stress.
Interactions between neurotype and personality/defenses.
Resources for autistic clients.
