Jenny Marion - Understanding Autism from a Neurodiversity Framework

This 4-hour course will explore contemporary understandings of autism from a psychodynamic, developmental, and neurodiversity-affirming perspective. The focus will be on the lived experiences of autistic adults, especially those who are high-masking and/or who were not diagnosed earlier in life.

Topics covered will include:

  • The social model of disability and the neurodiversity framework.

  • The sensory and neurocognitive underpinnings of autism.

  • Common autistic traits and experiences.

  • Diverse autistic presentations and underdiagnosed groups.

  • The impact of masking, discrimination, and minority stress.

  • Interactions between neurotype and personality/defenses.

  • Resources for autistic clients.
