Nadia Kuprian - Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with ADHD Adults

This 2-hour clinical seminar, taught by Dr. Nadia Kuprian, will focus on adapting psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy to adults with ADHD.

The medical model of understanding ADHD has been traditionally focused on deficits in the executive function and daily challenges associated with ADHD, especially in children and how they fit (or do not fit) into traditional educational and occupational settings. This course will take a “whole person” approach to the ADHD neurotype, identify how ADHD-differences manifest in adulthood, and guide clinicians in adapting their approach to these differences using a neuro-affirming and neuro-competent framework.

  • Neurobiological underpinnings that inform common ADHD behaviors, as well as intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Building a therapeutic relationship – unique psychodynamics involved in treatment of ADHD patients.

  • Integrating neuro-competent and neuro-affirming approaches in evolving psychodynamic treatments.

  • Clinical illustrations of psychodynamic psychotherapy with ADHD adults, demonstrating alliance building, neuroeducation, exploring transference and therapist’s countertransference reactions, and working through impasse.
